your memory flows through me like water

i               am              drowning from the inside

i have to let the water flow through my blood

so that my hands can touch

what you never touched

so my eyes can see

what you never dreamed

so my ears can hear

the things you always wanted

so my skin can feel the excitement you’d hoped for 

so my heart can love 

deeply 

truly

eternally,

my dear.

the water washes me clean

and i can float, 

despite these tears

that i carry in my head

like little brown suitcases

loaded

with bricks from foundations that will never become more than reminders of what cannot be built.

they are not mine to carry

i should have left them at the door

of your bedroom

(with the floating yellow orb

that smiled in a familiar way)

of the hospital tomb

that held what was left

nothing close to how beautiful you were.

you

were already filling up space

in my veins

giving me strength to move on 

move out, move up,                move

move all of the ways you might have

if your knee hadn’t been so twisted

move all of the ways you might have

if your own eyes, ears, lips, toes, legs

could have gotten up the miracle to do so.

and i missed it.

i missed the transformation of your

soul-into-ours.

like the way those coffee beans always lingered.

reminding us that life’s simple pleasures

are what change us

eternally.
